What are cement-based adhesives? Where and why are they used?

In the construction industry, special adhesive solutions are needed to securely adhere ceramic, tile, granite, natural stone, and similar cladding materials to surfaces. In this regard  , cement-based adhesives are one of the most preferred types of adhesives due to their affordability and high performance. They have a wide range of applications in both interior and exterior settings, on vertical or horizontal surfaces.

What is cement-based adhesive?

Cement-based adhesives are dry powder adhesives whose main binder is cement, usually enhanced with polymer additives, and used by mixing them with water. During application, they are transformed into a mortar and applied to the surface, providing high adhesion during the drying process.

Application Areas

Cement-based adhesives are commonly used in the following areas:

  • Ceramic and tile coverings

  • Granite, marble and natural stone applications

  • Wet areas (bathroom, shower, kitchen)

  • Underfloor heating systems

  • Exterior cladding

  • Gypsum board and reinforced concrete surfaces

Technical Specifications

Feature Explanation
High adhesive strength Provides excellent adhesion to various surface types.
Water resistance It is resistant to water and moisture, and is especially used in bathrooms and exterior applications.
Slip resistance It prevents ceramics from slipping, even in vertical applications.
Flexibility (Class C2) Reduces the risk of cracking on moving surfaces.
Easy to implement The mixing and spreading process is practical and quick.

Advantages

  • It offers an economical and widespread solution.

  • It is long-lasting and durable after application.

  • It is compatible with various ceramic sizes and surface types.

  • Elasticity and heat resistance can be increased with improved formulas.

  • Provides a smooth surface with high filling power.

Product Types and Classification (EN 12004)

  • C2 : Enhanced cement-based adhesive (high adhesion)

  • T : Reduced slippage.

  • E : Extended open waiting period

  • S1 / S2 : Semi-elastic / highly elastic properties

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is cement-based adhesive?

It is a cement-based construction chemical with high adhesion strength, sold in powder form and used by mixing it with water.

Where is it used?

It is used in ceramic, tile, granite, and natural stone applications; and in interior and exterior coatings.

Is it waterproof?

Yes. Cement-based adhesives, especially class C2 adhesives, exhibit high resistance to water and moisture.

Which type of adhesive should be preferred for tile bonding?

For tile applications, adhesives of at least class C1 are recommended; for wet areas, class C2TE adhesives are advised.

How long does it take to dry?

Complete drying takes between 24 and 48 hours, depending on the ambient temperature. Grouting can usually be done after 24 hours.
